The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room floor, but the light didn't reach the corners of the room. It was like something was actively keeping the light away. She sat on the sofa, clutching her tea cup, the liquid sloshing with every tremor she made. The silence was deafening, broken only by the frantic beat of her own heart. She hated the silence.

She stood up and paced in front of the bookshelf. An ornamental carving felt loose. She pulled at it, the wood feeling surprisingly frail. It was a secret switch of some sort. The bookcase slid sideways with a low rumble, revealing a doorway she'd never seen before.
